What Are GFCI Outlets & Where Are They Required?

GFCI outlets are one of the lowest-tech pieces of safety equipment in your home — and one of the most important. Here's what they do, where code requires them, and what to do when one trips and won't reset.

If it detects even a tiny difference — like current leaking through a person or into water — it cuts power in under 1/30th of a second. They're required wherever you're likely to be an electrical path to ground: kitchens, bathrooms, garages, laundry areas, basements, crawl spaces, and all outdoor outlets.

How a GFCI Actually Works

Inside a GFCI is a small current-balancing transformer. Under normal conditions, the current flowing out on the hot wire and the current returning on the neutral are perfectly balanced. The instant they aren't — meaning some current is leaking somewhere it shouldn't, like through water or a person — the GFCI senses the imbalance and trips, cutting power in less than a thirtieth of a second. That speed is the whole point: it reacts faster than your heart can even register a shock.

Where the National Electrical Code Requires Them

The NEC has steadily expanded GFCI requirements over the years. Today, code requires GFCI protection in most areas where you mix electricity and dampness:

  • Kitchens (countertop, and near sinks)
  • Bathrooms (all receptacles)
  • Garages and unfinished basements
  • Laundry rooms / utility areas
  • Outdoor receptacles and crawl spaces
  • Near swimming pools, hot tubs, and spas
  • Within 6 feet of any sink or wet bar

My GFCI Keeps Tripping and Won't Reset

If a GFCI trips once and resets fine, it's usually a one-off weather or load event. If it trips repeatedly — or won't reset at all — the cause is usually one of a few things: a plugged-in appliance that's leaking current (hair dryer, space heater, old power tool), moisture in an outdoor or bathroom box, a damaged cord, or a GFCI that has simply worn out after years of service.

A GFCI that won't hold its reset is doing its job and refusing to clear the danger. If you've unplugged everything and it still won't reset, don't leave it tripped or hide a problem behind it — have a licensed electrician trace the circuit.
