Why Does My Space Heater Keep Tripping the Breaker?

The Math Behind the Trip

A standard space heater pulls 1,500 watts. At 120 volts, that's about 12.5 amps. A normal 15-amp lighting or outlet circuit is only rated to carry 12 amps continuously. So a single space heater already uses more than a circuit was designed to handle for long periods — and the moment a lamp, a TV, a phone charger, or a laptop is also running on it, the breaker does exactly what it's supposed to: it trips before the wiring can overheat.

That breaker tripping isn't the problem. It's the safety device telling you the load is too much. The real question is whether the heater is on a circuit that can take it.

  • What else is on the same circuit? Space heaters should be the only major load on theirs.
  • Is it a 15-amp or 20-amp circuit? A 20-amp circuit handles a heater more comfortably — but only if it has the headroom.
  • Are other rooms' lights dimming when the heater runs? That hints the circuit is shared.
  • Is the cord or outlet warm? Heat is a sign of overloading or a loose connection.
